River Otters

This is a great time of year to see the river otters. They come up through holes in the ice, and spend time fishing and playing. River otters usually live alone, except for the females when they are raising their young. Otters usually just come together during the mating season around this time. River otters […]

Vulpes Vulpes – Red Fox

This morning, I had the treat of seeing a beautiful red fox in our back yard. It spent some time looking for food, and gave me a chance to take some photos. It was aware of me standing at the window, but didn’t seem very afraid. Red foxes have excellent eyesight, a keen sense of […]

Hello Deer!

When I was out in my kayak last week, I saw this young deer down at the edge of the water. We are seeing a lot more deer this year. It seems that almost every time we go for a drive, we see at least one or two. They are called white-tailed deer because the […]

a black bear visit

Today we were out on our lake and noticed something swimming in the water. We weren’t sure whether it was a dog or a bear until we got up closer. It was a young bear, and quite nervous about the boats nearby. I used my longer lens so that we wouldn’t be scaring it too […]

Deer Visitors

We have had a doe and three fawns visiting our yard and neighbour’s yards this winter. It’s interesting to watch them as they wander around. It’s been a long winter for them. Some neighbours are feeding them, but today they were enjoying our cedar trees and bushes.

A Fisher in our Backyard

Yesterday we had a fisher visit us in the backyard. A couple of these pictures were taken by my husband as I have injured my shoulder and can only hold the camera with one hand. It’s difficult to get a sharp photo. Fishers are part of the weasel family. They aren’t seen very often as […]

Snapping Turtles

It’s been awhile since I took some pictures of snapping turtles. We see them in springtime, laying eggs alongside the road. My sister and her husband were here for a short time, and she was hoping to see a snapping turtle. So … we stopped and took some photos. The next pictures are of one swimming […]

Rain, Rain, and More Rain

This spring it seems like it has rained more often than other years. Our spring runoff wasn’t too bad, but then the rain started. We had flooding at our place, and all around us, there were people dealing with flooding. It has not been an easy spring for people. Places near the water were hit […]
