Loons with Winter Plumage

We were able to go out in the pontoon boat today. It’s been a wonderful October – lots of rain, but the temperature has been warm for this time of year. We saw several loons. The following pictures were taken on Pine Lake.

This is an adult loon with its winter plumage. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference between a juvenile and an adult in winter plumage. When I checked, the difference is that the juveniles have a distinct whitish-gray tips of their feathers. This creates a scalloped pattern.
