Eastern Cottontail Rabbits

Apparently there are 5 rabbit and hare species in Canada. We have some Eastern Cottontails (bunny rabbits) here in our area. We are seeing more of them all the time compared to several years ago.

They aren’t very afraid of us and can often be seen in our yard or in other years as we go for our early morning walks. They often “freeze” like this one in the hopes that we won’t notice them.

At other times, they continue eating. They enjoy the different plants in the area, feasting mostly on dandelions, grasses and various clovers.

We had a young one in our yard for quite awhile, but believe that some animal found him. They would overpopulate without predators finding them, as the female may have 3 to 5 litters in a year. Each litter would have around 5 babies in the litter.

Right now they are very brown which is a contrast to early spring when they were losing the white fur of the winter.

It’s been interesting watching them. So far, my plants have not been touched, but I do know that that can happen.
