Winter Adult Common Loons

Our loons are starting to show their winter plumage.  Their heads and bills turn grey, as well as their back feathers. Their necks are white. This looks very different from their black and white colours in the spring and summer when they have their breeding summer plumage.

Their shades are varied as they change to their winter colours.

We were able to see some of them fishing, and relaxing. They often swim with their heads down in the water as they look for fish to go after. .

It won’t be long before they head south for the winter.

This next loon was startled by another loon coming up under it. Their were a few frantic moments as they sorted themselves out.

I believe the next few pictures are of a young juvenile loon and an adult. The young loon  looks similar to the winter adults. The difference is that they have more white on their head and back.

God’s creation is amazing!
