Burmis Tree

At the east side of the Crowsnest Pass in Alberta is the Burmis Tree. At one time there was a town of Burmis located in close proximity, but it became a ghost town when the coal mines and lumber companies were closed.

The Burmis Tree is a historical site showing where the Crowsnest Pass begins. It is actually a limber tree which is probably about 700 years old. Some sources say it is only 400 years old, but regardless, it is a very old tree. In the late 1970’s it died, and remained standing until high winds knocked it over in 1998.

It was a very significant landmark for the community and those traveling through, so the community “repaired” the tree, giving it support with rods and brackets.

It is still a landmark, and is known as the most photographed tree in Canada. So … of course, I photographed it.

In the first photo, you can see the support for part of the tree. I’ve edited it out in the other photos.

Just as this tree marks the way to the Crowsnest Pass, so Jesus marks the way and is the way to God for us:

Jesus said,
I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father
except through Me …
John 14:6
